Fashion Armor

This was the fashion season of all things tough. Studs, chains, leather, sharp lines, strong shoulders. Something dark has been brewing in the fashion imagination of many designers. So many of these looks feel like armor and I wonder: against what are we are armoring ourselves? Likely many things. Sometimes fashion trends seem almost poetic.

For instance, check out this chainmail waistcoat from topshop. Medieval chic, lol.

Here are two pieces I’m contemplating adding to my closet. I am drawn to them because they are tough but still girlishly charming.

This gorgeous leather skirt is a perfect example. I don’t have anything like it and I am trying to imagine how I would style it. This skirt looks like it means business. I want to mix it with cashmere or silk. Or maybe a cotton tank, a la Alexander Wang, for a totally different look.

Dorothy Perkins leather skirt. Originally £60, now selling for £30!

Second, these Pour la Victoire heels are killing me! I want them! I passed on the Louboutin Mad Mary heels, which are clearly the inspiration for these. What was I thinking! Anyway, this shoe comes in black and rose. I love the rose version because the studs seem almost paradoxical compared to the delicate color. Pretty and pretty tough—like many of the fashionistas I know! Great statement shoes.
