The Evening Suit

For an evening in Los Angeles I wanted to wear something that had the feel of an evening suit. The core pieces are your jacket and trouser, and ideally they would each be a little dressier than your office suit. Think slim lapels, color, or refined textures. I debated about which top to wear until I pulled out this lace and satin camisole with a built-in bra from my dresser. Technically, it’s a piece of lingerie-inspired shapewear, but wears like a supportive cami. I’ve had it for years and it still had tags on it! I wore this outfit to a fall fashion preview hosted by UK brand Simply Be.

It’s that time of year again! Off-season shopping is in full swing. I had to pick up these two things: the prettiest faux leather and ponte top and this contrast stripe long sleeve tee. Both of these will look so cute with boyfriend jeans. By the way, if you’ve been looking for a great plus-size boyfriend jean I found the perfect one (chic-slouchy and 100% cotton) at City Chic.

I’m most excited about this Barefoot Dreams wrap cardigan being on sale. It’s the softest, coziest thing you’ll ever wear. I have one that I’ve cherished since I gave birth (though this one is in plus-size!) and I can’t recommend it enough. Loungewear is serious stuff for moms and I chill with the best of them. Finally, this beautiful trio of Voluspa candles (a personal favorite) is also marked off. It includes the scents: Yuzu Rose Stonecrop, Sake Lemon Flower, and Linden and Dark Moss.

This outfit was inspired by a scoop of neapolitan ice cream–well, the strawberry and chocolate parts which are my favorite. I snapped up this Rachael Ruddick crossbody bag when it went on sale recently. It came in several leather options but embossed croco is my favorite (love that gold hardware.) To go have a drink with my husband on Saturday night, I wore this pink pencil skirt and crop top. I haven’t worn anything with a thigh split since the last time I wore my favorite draped dress, but I thought this was a fun night-in-LA look.

This post is also a love letter to my thighs.

Thighs: stretched smooth in front of dressing room mirrors only to bounce back to their natural dimpled state. This is for the girls, like me, who changed carefully in the locker room to hide your body. For women whose jeans wear away from the inner seams out, this is for you too. For the girls who wore shorts under dresses. For the ones who didn’t and rubbed their skin raw after a night of dancing. Wear the shorts. Wear the short dress. No thigh gap. No problem.

I’m ready for warm days, a fresh face, and a pedicure peeking out from my sandals. Sometimes I have difficulty reconciling my style (feminine, often overdressed) with my lifestyle (toddler-chasing mami). I wanted to feature a look that is beautiful, but still wearable. I can wear this to story time at the library or on a date with my husband. Perfect for me. Do you like this too?
