She’s been advent-planning and crafting all winter. By the time Christmas comes she’ll be in the midst of a schooling break but already thinking about January. This is a gift guide for homeschooling mamas. Of course, the homeschooling mom will love a homemade gift. But these are great ideas too, especially if you tap into the kind of homeschooling mom she is. The nature-lover might want a new pair of hiking boots. The home astronomer might love an upgrade to her telescope. The unschooler might want a pair of noise-canceling headphones. I jest—and honestly, I’ll take some too.
I made this list with the Charlotte Mason homeschooler in mind, but it could apply to a wider range of moms who love coziness and books. Doesn’t that describe virtually all of us?
1. Irish knit sweater
She appreciates the work that goes into these finely made knits. I love this sweater in particular because the shape feels modern but the knit is classic. Whether she’s home, taking the kids to the library, or heading out on another homeschool excursion, this is sure to become a favorite sweater. Not sure about sizing but love the idea of a cozy gift? Get an Irish throw blanket. I promise it will be put to good use.
2. Latin book
“Mater est laetus!” the kids will say. If she’s interested in ancient history and languages, but hasn’t taken a course, this Latin book by Betts is excellent. I’ve checked this out from the library three times so it’s time to buy one for myself. There’s also one for Greek. It’s a great reference to have on hand if she wants the kids to have lessons but wants to brush up on the elements herself.
3. Frankincense and Myrrh candle
For the mom who planned advent readings and holds the Nativity story close to her heart, this candle by Joshua Tree Desert Rose is a beautiful stocking stuffer.
4. Gift card to her favorite shop
Does she love finding out-of-print books or does she keep Etsy wishlists? An e-gift card is great for those who short on time and want their gift to arrive instantly. Just make sure it’s to one of her favorite shops.
5. Leather-bound copy of her favorite poems
They don’t make books like they used to, right? Find out her favorite poet (Dickinson, Yeats, Longfellow, so many!) and track down a leather-bound version which she’ll keep forever. You might find a compiled edition by a book press like Easton for a good price on eBay or you can also use the site to find beautiful vintage copies.
6. A handmade mug
It’s part of every morning so it should be as lovely as can be. I always reach for mugs that are pretty, yet substantial. This speckled beauty is from Works of Hope. This style sells out a lot but is often replenished. You could add some nice coffee. My favorite is illy classic.
7. Breakfast tea
This is my favorite tea; it’s strong, bright, and smooth, perfect for morning. It comes from Fortnum & Mason and in the past I’ve made big orders around Christmastime to justify the shipping. But during the holidays Williams Sonoma carries some of the tins too, making it easier to get if you just need one.
8. Watercolor travel sets
For the mom eager to get back to regular nature explorations with the kids, I think a couple watercolor travel sets would be a great mom-and-the-kids kind of gift. The water brushes are especially cool. The art wall is about to get much lovelier!
